Why Every School Should Have a Yearbook

(Even If You Think You Don't Have Time)

Almost every school I speak to says the same thing: “We'd love to do a yearbook, we just never have the time.”

I understand it completely, a yearbook feels like a big project on top of an already full year. But it's one of those things that, once it exists, everyone wonders how the school ever managed without it.

Parents and Pupils Genuinely Love Them

A yearbook isn't just another piece of print. It's a record of an entire year, the trips, the events, the friendships, the moments that don't make it into a newsletter but matter enormously to the people who lived them.

Children keep them. Not for a term, not for a year - for good. A yearbook is one of the few things from school life that a child (and later, an adult) still has in a drawer at home years afterwards. Parents feel the same way. It becomes a keepsake, not just a document.

It Can Also Be Your Best Marketing Tool

At Yarrells School & Nursery, the yearbook isn't just handed out at the end of the year, it's included as part of the school prospectus. And it's genuinely one of the best things they have to show prospective families.

Think about what a yearbook actually communicates to a parent who's deciding between schools: it shows real events, real pupils, real moments, across an entire year. It says more about what a school is actually like day to day than any polished brochure copy ever could. It's proof, not promises.

“No One Wants Print Anymore” - Except They Do

There's a common assumption that print is dying - that prospectuses and yearbooks should just be digital now. I don't think that's true, and I don't think most parents do either.

People still like picking up a physical brochure. There's something about holding something, flicking through it, showing it to a partner or grandparent, leaving it on the kitchen table, that a PDF or web page just doesn't replace. A well-made print yearbook or prospectus still carries weight, literally and otherwise, in a way digital alternatives don't.

That's not to say digital doesn't have its place, it absolutely does, alongside print. But dropping print entirely often means losing exactly the thing that makes a lasting impression.

What a Yearbook Actually Captures

Done well, a yearbook highlights everything a school has done across the year, the trips, the sports days, the productions, the small in-between moments, in a way that reminds everyone, pupils and parents alike, just how much happens in a single school year.

That's exactly why the “no time” excuse is worth pushing past. The value isn't just sentimental - it's a genuine record of the school's year, and for prospective families, a genuine reason to choose it.

Taking the Time Pressure Off

This is exactly the kind of project I take off a school's plate. I handle the design, layout and production, working from the photos and content the school already has, so it doesn't add to an already busy team's workload, and it still ends up looking like something worth keeping.

If your school has always wanted a yearbook but never found the time, that's usually where I come in.

How It Works

Getting the content together is usually the part schools worry about most, so here's how I keep it manageable:

  • Flat rate of £30 an hour - the same transparent pricing as all my design work, so there are no surprises

  • I'll guide you through gathering content - what to collect from teachers and pupils, and the easiest way to get it to me, so it doesn't fall entirely on one already-stretched staff member

  • Print costs are separate and depend on the page count - I'll advise on what page count actually suits your school's year, so you're not paying for more than you need

  • Advertising space can help cover the cost - many schools sell space to local businesses within the yearbook, and I can advise on how to set this up so the print cost isn't coming entirely out of school funds

The aim is a yearbook that looks brilliant and doesn't become a burden to produce.
